Like other General Motors mid size cars, the 1973 Monte Carlo was no longer a hardtop but a pillared Colonnade coupe with rear side opera windows and frameless door glass. It had a federally mandated 5 mile per hour front bumper, a double shell roof for noise reduction and rollover protection, and a new wraparound instrument panel, and a Monte Carlo Landau model was added. It was named Car of the Year by Motor Trend and set a new Chevrolet sales record, with nearly 250,000 sold.
