A Cadillac like egg crate grille similar to that of the 1971 Caprice, rectangular front parking lamps at the edges of the grille, a wider hood spear and a metal rear trim molding marked the 1972 Monte Carlo, the final year of the first generation. Chevrolet did not list gross horsepower figures for 1972, the four speed manual transmission was discontinued from the option list, and production rose to 180,819 for a new record.
