A record 27,368 Eldorados were sold during the 1971 model year, and an Eldorado convertible was also offered for 1971, the first in the line since 1966. Door glass remained frameless and the hardtop rear quarter windows were deleted, replaced by a fixed opera window in the widened C pillar. The 500 cubic inch V8 engine remained an Eldorado exclusive in the car that grew six inches in wheelbase. The 1971 car began the ninth generation.
