The Subaru 360 of 1970 was in its thirteenth year on sale, superseded the following year by the R-2. It was a rear engined, two door city car of 450 kilograms with monocoque construction, swing axle suspension and a fiberglass roof panel, available as a two door sedan, a station wagon, a convertible and in sport variants. The Subaru 360 was designed in response to the Japanese government's light car or kei car regulations and its proposal for a larger national car.
