Following the acquisition of the Jeep brand in 1970 by American Motors Corporation, the Commando continued production, with the C101 still built from the Kaiser era tooling, now alongside AMC's existing passenger car business. AMC would reengineer the vehicle to use its own engines in the 1972 redesign, so the 1970 model remained a Kaiser designed vehicle in AMC ownership, still a compact four wheel drive wagon, pickup, convertible or roadster.
