The Road Runner went on sale for the 1968 model year, first only as a two door pillared coupe and later in the year as a hardtop. Its standard engine was a 383 cubic inch V8 with the camshaft from the 440, and the 426 Hemi was a costly option. Plymouth planned on about 20,000 sales and delivered around 45,000, third among all muscle cars behind the Pontiac GTO and the Chevelle SS. Dodge added its cousin, the Super Bee, in the middle of the year.
