Ford also designed the Econoline as a forward control vehicle in 1966, with the engine between the front seats rather than in a rear engine layout like its rivals. It competed with the Chevrolet Corvair van and the Volkswagen Transporter, and was a cabover van with its seats above the front axle. The E Series was Ford's full size van, sold as the Econoline and Club Wagon and as a cutaway chassis. It was the best selling full size van in the United States from 1980 until the Transit replaced the vans in 2014.
