The Bronco launched in August 1965 as a 1966 model, a compact off road vehicle with a chassis built just for it and four wheel drive on every example. Ford offered a two door wagon, a half cab pickup and an open roadster, at a base price of 2,194 dollars with a long option list. The standard engine was a 105 horsepower 170 cubic inch six derived from the Falcon, and a 200 horsepower 289 V8 became optional in March 1966. A Bronco funny car also ran the quarter mile.
