In 1963 the LeMans became a separate series, with sales nearly half of combined Tempest and LeMans production, and the 1963 models, referred to as senior compacts, were slightly larger and heavier. A new V8 option was Pontiac's 326 cubic inch V8, ordered on 52 percent of the 131,490 Tempests and LeMans sold in the 1963 model year. Twelve 1963 Super Duty Tempests were built to race in the NHRA Factory Experimental class.
