A three speed manual transmission was standard on the Econoline of 1963, with a four speed from Dagenham introduced that year and dropped in 1964. An eight door version of the van, with two more doors on the driver side, was added for 1963, besides the standard six door cargo van. It was the best selling full size van in the United States from 1980 until the Transit replaced the vans in 2014. The E Series was Ford's full size van, sold as the Econoline and Club Wagon and as a cutaway chassis.
