The 1962 model year full size Plymouths were downsized with more compact outside dimensions, which suffered in sales because American buyers believed bigger was better, although owners liked the smaller car in daily use. A Belvedere with a six cylinder engine and automatic transmission was compared with the intermediate Ford Fairlane and the compact Chevy II in an economy test by Popular Mechanics, as the Belvedere became a more compact car.
