For 1962 all of the sheet metal of the Bel Air except the door panels was changed, and full carpeting returned as standard equipment on all 1962 Bel Air models for the first time in several years. The car's roofline was a carryover from the 1961 hardtop coupe. In its fifth generation the Bel Air kept its place as the mid range full size Chevrolet, above the Biscayne and below the Impala, and the Impala was the top of the line, with three taillights per side.
