For 1961 the Bel Air received a new body, in the era when the Bel Air sat below the Impala in the Chevrolet range and above the Biscayne. It was the first model year of the fifth generation, which ran through 1964 and was followed by the totally restyled full size Chevrolet of 1965. The 1961 car also appears in the history of the Pontiac built on Bel Air bodies in Canada, called the Laurentian from 1954 to 1969.
