Production of the Metropolitan ceased in April 1961, and the last Metropolitan body was made by Fisher and Ludlow on April 10, 1961, because of marginal sales and the fact that a four or five passenger Rambler American could be bought for only about a hundred dollars more. Sales of existing inventory continued until March 1962. About 95,000 Metropolitans were sold in the United States and Canada, one of the top selling imports of its time.
