In August 1961 the Super DX was added to the Mitsubishi 500, which kept the car name 500 but had the engine changed to a 594 cc NE35A unit of 25 horsepower. The car did not gain much popularity in the market and production of the 500 stopped after a short period, with 13,289 built. Its size and engine size were, even then, within the range of today's kei cars. It had been designed by engineers who had designed aircraft during the war.
