In 1961 the manual transmission from the Austin Gipsy was added as an option on the FX4 taxi. The first cars had been fitted with a Borg-Warner automatic gearbox. The FX4 of 1961 was in its fourth model year, a London taxi designed by Austin with the dealers Mann and Overton and built by Carbodies of Coventry. In its day the FX4 was the most widely used taxi in London. The diesel engine of the first model was a 2178 cubic centimeter BMC unit.
