The first FX4 was delivered in July 1958 and went on test with York Way Motors, and the official launch came later that year at the Commercial Motor Exhibition at Earls Court, where an order worth 24 million pounds for 2,000 FX4 cars was placed. The first model had a 2178 cubic centimeter BMC diesel engine and a Borg-Warner automatic transmission. Carbodies began making the body and assembling the cab in 1958.
