From 1962 the Austin 2199 cubic centimeter petrol engine was available in the FX4, as an alternative to the diesel engine of the first model, which was based on the petrol Austin A70 engine. The FX4 had been on sale for four years, and it remained the most widely used taxi in London. The first FX4 had been fitted with a diesel engine. The petrol option followed four years after the cab appeared in 1958.
