The first Dodge Darts were introduced for the 1960 model year as downsized large cars for Dodge dealers who had sold Plymouths since 1930. They rode on the unibody Plymouth platform with an 118 inch wheelbase, and the wagons used the 122 inch wheelbase of the Polara wagon. Sales of the new Dart were higher than those of the Matador and Polara, which cut into Plymouth's sales, and 111,600 Seneca models were sold.
