The 600 ended production in November 1959, having sold less than BMW had hoped. About 35,000 were made, which the sources put down partly to competition from more conventional cars such as the Volkswagen Beetle and partly to the bubble car image of the Isetta that hurt a larger, more upscale car. The 600 still began the design work for the 700 that replaced it and introduced the semi trailing arm rear suspension to BMW.
