The Ranchero was introduced in December 1956, three months after the traditional September model year start, as a 1957 model based on the full size Ford platform, specifically the short wheelbase Custom sedan, the two door Ranch Wagon and the Courier sedan delivery. It integrated the cab and cargo bed into the body, unlike a standard pickup truck, and it proved popular enough to spawn Chevrolet's El Camino in 1959.
