In 1956 a new Consul appeared with the Ford code of 204E, still the four cylinder submodel of the Zephyr range with the same basic body shell, but with a longer wheelbase, a larger 1703 cc, 59 horsepower engine and a complete restyle borrowing cues from the 1956 Thunderbird and Fairlane. A Consul Mark II tested by The Motor in 1956 had a top speed of 79.3 miles per hour and cost 781 pounds including taxes. The Consul Mark II was the four cylinder car in the Zephyr range and shared its body shell with the Zephyr and Zodiac.
