From 1953 a convertible conversion of the Consul was made by Carbodies. A car tested by The Motor in 1953 had a top speed of 72 miles per hour and could accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 28 seconds, with a fuel consumption of 26 miles per imperial gallon. The test car cost 732 pounds including taxes. The Zephyr Zodiac was launched alongside the Consul that autumn. It was built by Ford of Britain at Dagenham. The Consul was the four cylinder car in the Zephyr range, with unibody construction.
