The Continental debuted for the 1940 model year, the production version of a personal car that Edsel Ford had commissioned in 1939 as a coachbuilt Lincoln-Zephyr convertible to use on vacation, with European continental styling that gave the model line its name. Through 1942 the body design stayed largely the same. It was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car, large coupes and convertibles that stressed features, styling and comfort over performance.
