Electro-Motive Diesel, usually called EMD, is a maker of diesel-electric locomotives, locomotive products and diesel engines for the rail industry. It traces its roots to the Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation, founded in 1922 and bought by General Motors in 1930, after which it was known as General Motors' Electro-Motive Division. Its F-series, GP-series and SD-series locomotives became the standard diesel power on North American railroads from the late 1930s onward. General Motors sold the business in 2005, and it has been owned by Progress Rail since 2010.
