The EMD DDA40X, commonly known by the Union Pacific nickname Centennial, is a freight diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division for the Union Pacific Railroad beginning in 1969, built around two complete engine and generator sets mounted on a single, unusually long frame riding on eight axles, making it one of the most powerful and longest single diesel-electric locomotive units ever built. Ordered to mark the centennial of the original transcontinental railroad's completion, the type was used by Union Pacific primarily on its heaviest freight trains across its mountainous western routes, where its exceptional power output let it substitute for multiple smaller locomotive units. Several examples have been preserved as one of the most celebrated single-unit American freight locomotives.
