EMD GP7

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD GP7 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division, with some units from General Motors Diesel in Canada, between October 1949 and May 1954. It was the first EMD road locomotive to use a hood unit body instead of a full car body, a layout that cost less to build and maintain and gave the crew much better view for switching. A 16-cylinder EMD 567B engine produced 1,500 horsepower. Of 2,734 built, most went to American railroads, with 112 for Canadian and 2 for Mexican railroads. It opened the GP, or General Purpose, series that railroaders came to call Geeps, and the GP9 replaced it.
