EMD SW1500

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD SW1500 is a 1,500 horsepower diesel-electric switcher locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from 1966 to 1974. It replaced the SW1200 in the EMD product line. It looks much like the SW1000, which had a different engine and a single exhaust stack where the SW1500 had two. Although designed for yard work, many railroads regularly used SW1500s in road freight service. Many remain in active service with shortlines, switching and terminal railroads and equipment leasing companies such as GATX, and several have been preserved, including units at the Kentucky Railway Museum and the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
