EMD E8

The EMD E8 is an American diesel-electric passenger locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division, introduced in 1949 as part of the streamlined E-unit series that powered many of the era's named intercity passenger trains across the United States. Built with two diesel engines driving generators that supplied power to traction motors, and clad in the smooth, streamlined carbody styling associated with the E-unit line, it was widely purchased by American railroads seeking to replace steam power on their premier passenger services during the postwar dieselization of American railroading, and surviving examples remain in preserved and excursion service today.
