Krupp was the trade name of the German steel and armaments group Friedrich Krupp AG, based in Essen, which traced its origins to a steel foundry built there in 1811. In transport terms the name stands for a maker of heavy and military vehicles and of railway equipment: the group produced locomotives, trucks and artillery tractors, among them the six-wheeled Krupp Protze of the 1930s, and for much of the twentieth century it was one of the largest industrial firms in Europe. After the Second World War its trucks were sold under the Südwerke name from 1946 until 1954, when the Krupp name was considered rehabilitated. The company merged with Hoesch in 1992 and with Thyssen in 1999 to form ThyssenKrupp. This entry is the vehicle make Krupp; the corporate history lives with the company entry in the Business Atlas.
