The NSB Di 1 was a diesel-hydraulic locomotive built by Krupp for the Norwegian State Railways, the first diesel locomotive the railway ordered. Two units were ordered in 1937 to test the diesel-hydraulic transmission that Krupp had developed in the early 1930s, but wartime delays meant that only one was delivered, in 1942, numbered 601. It had a 1'BB'1 wheel arrangement, a driver's cab at one end only because it was meant to run in pairs, and two six-cylinder MAN diesel engines giving 1,472 kilowatts together, enough for 100 km/h and a weight of 82.7 tonnes. It served on the Bergen Line, then the Dovre Line and the Gjovik and Kongsvinger Lines, but technical faults, poor wartime workmanship, missing spare parts and a lack of staff expertise kept it out of service for long spells. It was retired and scrapped in 1959, but it taught the railway enough about diesel operation that the Di 2 class followed from 1954.
