Berliet was a French maker of cars, buses, trucks and military vehicles, based at Vénissieux outside Lyon. It was founded in 1899 and stayed in private hands, apart from a five year spell under sequestration from 1944 to 1949, until Citroën, then owned by Michelin, took it over in 1967. Renault bought it in 1974 and merged it with Saviem in 1978 to form Renault Véhicules Industriels, now Renault Trucks, and the Berliet name was phased out by 1980. Its best known products include the CBA truck of the First World War, the GLR truck of 1949 and the giant T100 of 1957, which was then the largest truck in the world.
