Hans Mezger (1929 to 2020) was a German automotive engineer who spent his career at Porsche, much of it designing racing engines. Born in Besigheim in Württemberg, he graduated from the Stuttgart Technical University in 1956 and went straight to Porsche's development department, where his first project was the valve train of the Fuhrmann-designed 547 engine. From 1959 he worked on the Type 753 flat-eight for the 804 Formula One car. He later led the design of the first production 911 engine, the Type 901, led the 1960s race design office that produced the 904, 906, 910, 907, 908 and 917, and led Porsche's development of turbocharging, including the 917/30 and the 911 Turbo. He also oversaw the TAG-Porsche Formula One turbo V6 and retired in 1994.
