After a four year gestation period the new front wheel drive Cavalier was introduced on 26 August 1981, and by 1982 Ford and Vauxhall had an effective two horse race at the top of this sector on the British market. The Cavalier was launched simultaneously with the identical new Opel Ascona, sold across the world in various guises on the J body platform. The 1982 Cavalier was the first full year of the front drive Mark II, a car launched at the end of August 1981.
