In mid 1981 Toyota completely redesigned the Celica Supra and the entire Celica lineup for the 1982 model year. In North America it came with a 2.8 liter 12 valve DOHC 5M-GE engine, and it quickly became a success there, being named Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year and one of the Car and Driver Ten Best for 1983 and 1984. It came as the L-type and the P-type, was sold in Japan as the Celica XX and in Europe from August 1982, and production ended in December 1985 to make way for the A70.
