The redesigned Hilux, marketed as the Hilux California in Japan, was introduced in August 1978. Its front axle was a live, leaf sprung design unlike the more car like type used on rear wheel drive Hiluxes, and the 1.6 liter 12R, 2.0 liter 18R and 2.2 liter 20R engines were offered. This was the first model year of the Toyota Hilux (third generation, N30 and N40), 1978 to 1982, which took over from the Toyota Hilux (second generation, N20); the 1979 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Hilux run from 1968 to 2026.
