The first Crown went on sale in January 1955 as a car for public transport, with small engines to keep it affordable under Japan's new annual road tax. It replaced the Master in November 1956, gained a Deluxe model with radio and heater in December 1955, and in October 1959 became the host of Japan's first diesel passenger car. Its coil and double wishbone front suspension was new for Toyota, and in 1958 it became the first Toyota exported to the United States.
