With the ninth generation Toyota divided the Corolla into two cars. The E120 went to Japan, Europe, Australasia and the Middle East, arriving in Japan in August 2000 with edgier styling and more technology, while the wider E130, sold in other Asian markets as the Corolla Altis and in North America from 2003, had its own look. The sedan and wagon came first, then a five door hatchback in January 2001 and a Europe only three door hatchback in 2002. The E120 stayed in production in China, as the Corolla EX, until 2017.
