In August 1988 the X81 series of Chasers were introduced to the Japanese market. In January 1988 the Avante Supra special edition was released as a companion to the updated third generation Supra, on the outgoing X70. This was the first model year of the Toyota Chaser (fourth generation, X80), 1988 to 1991, which took over from the Toyota Chaser (third generation, X70); the 1989 model year follows it.
