In July 1999 Toyota began production of the seventh generation Celica, with sales beginning late that year, after pictures of the XYR concept car released earlier in 1999. In July 2004 Toyota announced that the Celica would be discontinued in the United States at the end of the 2005 model year for lack of sales, which fell from 52,406 units in 2000 to 3,113 in 2005. Exports ceased in July 2005, and the last car was built on 21 April 2006 after 36 years and seven generations.
