The Celica was displayed at the Tokyo show in October 1970 together with the Toyota Carina, and marketed from December of the same year as a two door coupe. It was aimed at the North American market and was Toyota's response to the Ford Mustang, filling the place that the Toyota Sports 800 had held. This was the first model year of the Toyota Celica (first generation, A20 and A30), 1970 to 1976, the first generation covered for the Toyota Celica; the 1971 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Celica run from 1970 to 2006.
