Initially the naturally aspirated models received single point fuel injection, EGi, and this was replaced with a multi point system in August 2001. Power increased accordingly, up from 46 to 48 PS. The Sambar of 2001 was in its third year of the sixth generation, a rear engine cabover truck and van. Later generations used the water cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
