A supercharged Rex with an intercooler and electronic fuel injection arrived in March 1988 to answer the success of the Alto Works and Mira TR-XX, making 55 PS in both three and five door bodies. A supercharger gave less lag than a turbo, although its output was somewhat lower than that of the rivals. In May an electrically deployed canvas top joined the three door. A total of 1,902,811 Subaru Rexes were built in its lifetime.
