The 550 cc Rex was introduced in May 1977 with a 544 cc two cylinder four stroke engine that let the car meet the coming 1978 emissions rules, with a new chassis code and revised gearing and suspension for a quieter ride. Subaru also began building the Rex 5 in Taiwan in January 1977, aiming at about one hundred cars a month. The Rex's styling resembled Subaru's new compact car, the Leone. The Rex retained the rear engine layout of the Subaru 360 and R-2.
