The R-2 was introduced on 8 February 1969, and Subaru took 25,000 orders for the car within a month. Sales began in August of that year. It was a full model change of the popular Subaru 360 with a new look and more interior space, powered by the air cooled two cylinder EK33 engine mounted in the rear, from which the name R-2 comes. The R-2 continued to use the powertrain setup from the Subaru 360. Subaru continued with a rear engine platform to afford more trunk space up front and provide seating for four passengers.
