The first generation Pleo went on sale on 9 October 1998 to replace the Vivio, when new Japanese kei car size rules forced every make to redesign its models. It was a tall kei hatchback with three versions of the EN07 engine and many special editions, among them the retro Nesta of 1999 and the Nicot of 2000, and it ended in December 2009. It competed with the Honda Life, the Daihatsu Move and the Mitsubishi Toppo in the tall wagon segment of kei cars. Its model years run from 1998 to 2009.
