The Pleo went on sale in Japan on 9 October 1998 and took over from the Vivio at a time when new kei car size rules led every maker to redesign its models. It came with three versions of the EN07 engine: a naturally aspirated one of 46 PS, a supercharged one of 64 PS and a mildcharged one of 60 PS. The Vivio stayed on sale beside it until the end of October. The name pleo is Latin meaning to fill or to fulfill. The Pleo was available with a variety of 658 cc I4 engines: SOHC, DOHC, and supercharged in two different trim levels.
