The Outback idea came from Subaru of America, whose sales had slumped in the mid 1990s partly because it had no entry in the booming sport utility vehicle market. Lacking the money to design a new vehicle, Subaru added body cladding and a suspension lift to the Legacy wagon and named it the Legacy Outback. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show for the 1995 model year, first as a trim package on the base Legacy L wagon. Its model years run from 1995 to 1999.
