The Forester had three main models available in Australia until July 2005, X, XS and XT. In 2005 the L.L. Bean edition was added in the United States. From the Series II, released in August 2005, the engine was upgraded to 121 kilowatts for the X and XS and 169 kilowatts for the XT grade. The Sportshift mode was added to the four speed automatic transmission. The X and XS models used a 2.5 liter SOHC EJ253 engine, while the XT used a 2.5 liter turbocharged DOHC engine.
