In 2004 the turbocharged XT trim was released in the USA, though a turbocharged version had been available since the late 1990s elsewhere in the world. For the United States market the car was offered with either the 2.5 liter SOHC naturally aspirated engine or the 2.5 liter DOHC turbocharged version added in 2004, with active valve control cylinder heads. The X and XS models used a 2.5 liter SOHC EJ253 engine, while the XT used a 2.5 liter turbocharged DOHC engine.
